Wood Fence Ideas

Wood has a classic look that appeals to many homeowners and easily adds value to your home. When working with a contractor it’s important consider what material and type of wood your project will be constructed from. While cheaper lumber may be a lower upfront cost, higher quality materials can require less maintenance in the long run and stand up better to the elements. Here are a few of the most popular options to consider:

Cedar Fence Installation

Cedar is the highest quality option. It weathers extremely well and has less tendency to warp and shrink, compared to treated pine. While it is more expensive up front than treated pine, it requires less maintenance and is naturally resistant to insects and decay. A basic privacy fence is constructed with cedar pickets and treated pine posts and runners. Cedar posts and runners are available if desired.

Treated Pine Fencing

A basic treated pine project is constructed with treated pine pickets, posts, and runners. The wood naturally has splits and cracks in it but does not have loose knots or knot holes. The downside of this material is that it is more prone to shrink and warp. After the lumber is treated and dries out, it can twist and deform. It’s possible for the spacing between the pickets to increase as much as ½” inch The amount of shrinkage and warping that can occur is is unpredictable and varies on many factors.

Horizontal Fencing

A growing trend in the triangle area is horizontal fencing. These are made from cedar pickets and treated pine posts. Typically they have a 1” spacing between each picket, but are available with no spacing if desired. This style will stair step to follow the grade of the land and are unable to meet the ground flush on hills.
