While smaller outdoor spaces do not usually have much room for planting this is one way you can give your small garden more room to grow. They can also be used to break up a narrow space and add unique style to your backyard oasis.

Deciding where to place your work of art depends on the space being designed and how you plan to use the space. If your space is long and narrow, then using an arbor can break up the space into “sections” that could have different uses. One common mistake people make is not considering how it will add to their space. It’s important to consider the function upfront so that the correct materials are used and it’s is placed in the proper place. ​​

The style, and atmosphere of the design should match the style and architecture of your home. It’s important to know if you plan on having vines or hanging plants incorporated.

Arbor Materials
The material must be able to hold the weight of the plant as well as hold up to mother nature over the years. If you plan on growing vines, fruits, etc., then vinyl would be a good choice. If you need a decorative entrance, redwood, cedar or a pressure treated wood can make a beautiful first impression. If you choose to go with wood remember that the lower portion of the arbor will be underground so using a pressure treated wood for those elements is a smart decision.

Prior to the construction, it’s important consider what plants you will allow to grow on the unit. Pay close attention to the maintenance and pruning routine for every type of plant.
